However, the term Harajuku girl was popularized in the West by Gwen Stefani who used back up dancers called Harajuku girls and then made the cologne by the same name. Leap Day Marriage Proposal by Women

According to Irish lore a woman can propose to a man on February 29th - Leap day. This is apparently due to a deal St. Bridget struck with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men every 4 years in order to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty such as a gown or money if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day.

In Denmark tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman's proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.

In Finland the tradition is that if a man refuses a woman's proposal on leap day he should buy her the fabrics for a skirt.

So, ladies, this is your chance. If the man you love is taking his sweet time to propose, Leap day is your day!

I love hand made clothing. I used to sew up a storm when I was in Fashion Design school (not that I had any choice!) and I loved the fact that I wasn't limited to a certain color or pattern. I could make anything I wanted. My mom was a great knitter and could crochet afghans with her eyes closed. I however, did not inherit that gene and so I must admire the handiwork of those that did such as Ninela from Sub rosa. Latest crush: Colorful accessories

I am very difficult when it comes to purses. I usually buy one and wear it out so it really has to work for all seasons. I will however buy a smaller purse for the summer months but more often than not, I end up using my main purse just the same. I just can't get into switching wallets etc. in order to use a different purse....it's just too much work for me.

The bigger problem is that I rarely find a purse I like.......I literally have to fall in love with the purse for me to buy it. My present purse was in seriously bad shape....to the point where my husband was begging me to get a new one so I started my search. Over the last three months I tried purse after purse after purse without success. Not one of them managed to keep my eye for longer than a few minutes.....until the other day that is. And then I fell in love.

I know she doesn't look like much but wait.......

Now I've converted the purse to a more summery version. The best part is that I could've lowered the top even more if I had wanted to. You can also change the straps so that it becomes a handbag instead of a shoulder bag AND there is an extra strap to turn this bag into a knapsack or a satchel. Now THAT'S A PURSE!

Imagine a world where voice communication did not exist and we could only text each other. How popular would the telephone then be and who on earth would still want to text!

This world actually did exist. Prior to the development of the first commercial telephone in 1876, the only forms of communication were via letter (think Pony Express) or via Telegraph (old school texting). This aside from actually going to see someone in person of course!

Can you imagine how tedious it must've been to use the telegraph to send a message? Endless amounts of time tapping on a little knob to get your message across?

When the first telephone came on the market it was considered to be one of the greatest inventions of all time. It was revolutionary! Gone was the primitive time of writing or tapping out out your message. Now you just had to pick up the receiver, make a connection and voilà you could talk to someone. It was magic!

Telephones have since shrunk in size and have been developed into complicated pieces of machinery. Where before they were large and chunky, with no function other than voice communication, they are now tiny little computers that find us restaurants and give us directions.

The creme de la creme of phones is the iPhone. The iPhone has practically every function known to man. You can take pictures, shoot video, e-mail your friends, tweet, honk, holler, hoot, pin, follow and text in a matter of seconds. WOW! Now that's a phone! However, what many people don't seem to realize is that this hi-tech gadget they carry around actually has a built in telephone!

Social advancement has apparently led us back in time because we are replacing a 5 minute telephone conversation with actual human interaction, with dozens of text messages. Hmmmm.....wait.....punching little buttons to get our message across.....doesn't that sound familiar? Oh now I get it.....the iPhone is a portable telegraph!

I was recently asked what my million dollar idea would be and now I have my answer - The Telephone!

I live in jeans. I can't get enough of them. However, given that I am rather petite, with small hips and no waist to speak of (think rectangle), women's jeans often don't fit right. In comes 3X1.

DIY: Satsuma candles

I light candles all the time. I light candles for mood, for warmth and for scent but generally I light them because they make me happy. Candles give off such a nice warm glow that I find them irresistible in the Winter. So when I came across this little DIY project I just had to share it with you.

All you need is a Satsuma orange, olive oil, a knife, a spoon and some matches. How easy is that!

I love shoes - what female doesn't? But where to put them all is a whole other story.

I have mine stacked in their original boxes with the name of the shoe on the front so that they are easy to find. Another great way of knowing what shoes are where is by putting a snapshot of the shoes on the front of the box and then stacking them. This is a more visual approach and I like it. I think I'll do that with mine when I reorganize my closet.

In the mean time, I can dream of a beautiful room filled with shoes and boots.......

.......and um....some clothes thrown in for good measure!

I am fascinated by good design whether it be for a new product, a new kitchen or a new house. There are so many components that have to come together perfectly in order for the design to succeed. So many thoughts must first be put to paper and then brought to life.

Oftentimes we don't realize just how complicated something can be to make. A good example of this is the beautiful skull watch designed by Fiona Krüger who studied at ECAL and made the watch as her final masters project. Fiona was nice enough to send me the photos of her design process so that we could follow along with the project from start to finish.

"Memento Mori reinterprets the theme of mortality in horlogery, drawing inspiration from the 17th century skull watch of Mary Queen of Scotts, Mexican Dia de Los Muertos decoration and beautifully decorated skeleton movements found in today’s luxury watches. The pieces of the skeletonised dial are layered to make up the form of a skull, echoing the layers which make up a mechanical watch movement. Each piece is decorated and assembled by hand resulting in a unique timepiece rich in tradition, know how and symbolism."

DIY: Chalkboard Mug

I am in the mood to create today and so I went in search of an easy but fun craft project and I found this one on Wit & Whistle: The Chalkboard Mug. Looks like fun and seems quite simple to do. It could also make for an interesting Christmas or Hostess gift don't you think?

Here are the instructions re-posted from Wit & Whistle

You will need:

A porcelain mug
Painter's tape
Pebeo Porcelaine 150 Chalkboard Paint (available at Amazon)
A soft bristle paint brush (a watercolor brush works well)

How To:

1. Make sure your mug is clean and dry.

2. Use painter's tape to mask off the part of the mug that you don't want to paint, or you could skip this step and paint the whole mug. Personally, I think it looks snazzy only partially painted.

3.Apply the paint with a soft bristle brush. If you mess up just wipe the paint away with a wet paper towel and try again. Please note that this particular porcelain paint says it's not recommended for surfaces that come into contact with food (although it's water based and nontoxic, so I don't understand what the problem would be).

4. As soon as you are done painting, carefully remove the tape. If you remove it before the paint is dry, the tape will be less likely to peel up the edges of the paint.

4. Let the paint dry for 24 hours. Then, bake your mug according to the paint package instructions. After baking turn off the oven and leave the mug inside until it has gradually cooled to room temperature. After you bake it the paint is dishwasher and microwave safe.

5. I recommend chalking up your mug before you fill it with a hot beverage. (I learned this the hard way!)

Part of the fun of Christmas is to be able to trudge out into the snow and pick your own Christmas tree. There is something about the snow crunching under your feet and the scent of pine that just makes everything seem warm and inviting even on the coldest of days.

However many people, such as myself, don't really have room for a Christmas tree in their living room so we have to find other ways of adding the Christmas spirit to our homes.

Given that my own personal decor leans towards industrial glam with a smattering of minimalism (which basically means I like a lot of silver and white and I don't like clutter), I am always on the lookout for Christmas decorations that are simple and that won't clutter up my living space.

Main Attraction: Sweden's ICEHOTEL

For someone like myself who is most ungrateful towards Winters bounty, I have been strangely attracted to Sweden and all of its wonders. Most namely the Northern lights and the ICEHOTEL.

Located in the little town of Jukkasjärvi far north of the Arctic Circle, the ICEHOTEL is built from scratch by different artists each year. Saying that the process is complex would be an understatement. It is truly a labor of Love.

This year, artists from 15 countries, including Argentina, Estonia, Spain, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands will build the ICEHOTEL. The entire process is quite remarkable and is described in full here.

There is something magical about a country that has an outdoor light show and a Hotel made of Ice. And I'm not the only one that thinks that way. Many people decide not only to visit the ICEHOTEL but to wed there as well. This year the Ice Church at the ICEHOTEL will open its doors to guests and wedding parties alike on December 25th.

I love dancing. I grew up in a home where dancing was an everyday event. I can still see my mom dancing around to Tom Jones's "Whats new pussycat" while making supper. My dad, ever the charmer, was no slouch either. He could do the foxtrot like there was nobody's business.

The dancing is one of the things I miss the most about my youth and so in the spirit of being thankful, mom, dad, thanks for the wonderful memories. I miss you both.

And to you my readers, I offer you my favorite dance - The Tango.

One of my clients told me about "Frownies" when I commented on how youthful she looked for her age. She is a makeup artist and had been using them forever. Lucky her as although she was approaching 40 she really looked more like 30. Now that's something to get excited about! Seems like they were a trick of the trade but no more! Now it's our turn! Today is one of those dreary fall days. You know the ones where everything seems dark and gray. As I sit in my kitchen, on my finally arrived stools, I am feeling the lack of color. Given the minimalist decor and the stainless steel everything, my kitchen is somewhat.....well.....cold........!

Not one to ponder for long, I decided to search out the funkiest and most colorful kitchen appliances. I got stuck on toasters....wait until you see why!

Marbled Chocolate & Orange Tavoletta

I am loving this recipe from "The Raw Chef" Russell James.

For the crust

3/4 cup carob powder
1 cup almonds
1/2 cup dates
4 tbsp coconut oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

1. First process nuts, cinnamon, salt and carob powder into small crumbs.

2. Add dates, coco oil and vanilla extract and process again.

3. Press into the bottom of 9″ square pan and place in fridge whilst working on filling.

Note: Before making this chocolate you should place the grated cacao butter in the dehydrator to melt. Alternatively you can melt it in a bowl over another bowl of hot water.

For the marbling

1 cup cashews
1 tbsp agave
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup water
5 tbsp melted cacao butter

1. Mix all ingredients in a high power blender until completely smooth.

For the filling

2 cups cashews
1 cups orange juice
1 tbsp orange zest
2 cups cacao powder
1 & 1/2 cups grated cacao butter
2 tbsp vanilla
1 cups agave nectar

1. Mix the cashews, orange juice, orange zest, vanilla, and agave nectar in a vita-mix until smooth.

3. Add cacao butter and cacao powder, and blend again.

4. Pour chocolate mixture onto base and use a spatula to achieve a level surface.

5. Drizzle the marbling mixture over the top in lines using a plastic bottle or a spoon. Drag a toothpick across the top to create the marble effect.

Chocolate Chakra-Balancing Brownies

My friend Maria Aurora Amore has graciously given me permission to post her recipe for these incredible Chakra-Balancing Brownies. Enjoy!

Maria’s Chakra-Balancing Brownies

(Completely organic, completely raw, completely chakra-balancing!)

1 cup organic raw walnuts, crushed or finely chopped

10 fresh organic dates, pitted and finely chopped

1 cup organic cacao powder

3 teaspoons organic cacao nibs

1 small organic carrot, shredded

2 teaspoons organic coconut oil

1 cup organic coconut flakes, unsweetened

With love, focus and the intention for balance, mix all ingredients, except coconut flakes in a large bowl.

Add ¼ cup of water to make mixture soft and sticky. Add more water if needed.

Form mixture into small round brownie balls.

Coat brownie balls with coconut flakes.

Refrigerate in glass container for 3 to 4 hours.

Ingest with loved ones and feel the balance!

Trees.....they shelter us from the rain, provide shade from the Summer's sun and encompass us with their glorious energy. And if that wasn't enough they dazzle us with a color change just before Winter comes. Sometimes you can capture a moment, just when the sun is going down, where the trees seem to twinkle and come to life.

Fabulously French

Swirling leaves and colorful landscapes define Autumn but I often find myself feeling a little sad this time of year. When I was a child my mother often brought home a little surprise to cheer me up. Little cakes called Petit Fours that were so sweet that they made your teeth tingle. I still remember how I would eat the cake as slowly as possible in order to make it last. Not long ago, I wandered into a French pastry shop called Duc de Lorraine and fell upon these beautiful little cakes. Naturally I had to buy one or two or three.....

Another French specialty - "les marcarons"- come in all sorts of wonderful colors to make you happy again.

Hair-raising Halloween!

I love the whole idea of Halloween. I mean what other Holiday offers you such diversity! You have tombstones on lawns, smoking cauldrons in windows, blood curdling screams emitting from doorbells and costumes portraying everything from the Smurfs to Zombies. And um, one other thing - THE PUMPKIN (and candy!...don't forget the candy!!).

Ah the pumpkin....I look at these marvelous orange fruits (yes fruit, I looked it up!) and see a blank canvas just waiting to have fangs carved into it. Or, maybe a simple word like, BOO!

Did I scare you?

There are many ways of carving a pumpkin. Some do it free style, armed simply with a knife and their imagination. Others opt for a template, some of which are simply awesome. Chocolate Mousse with a Twist!

Prior to my health crisis at the beginning of this year, if you would've asked me what a RAW food dish was I would've said a vegetable platter with dip. Not so inspiring.......

Now, thanks to YASMIN FUDAKOWSKA-GOW who posed for the RAW Foods calendar I have become quite enlightened and I feel strongly that I should share my new found knowledge with you. Especially given that it includes chocolate!

Here is a recipe that is posted on the Raw divas website that is something you will definitely want to try!

Raw Food Recipe: Chocolate Mousse

Written by Danielle on June 2, 2011 – -

Ripe avocados are the best base for chocolate mousse and chocolate puddings. Don’t tell your family. They would never know!

Chocolate Mousse recipe from Decadent Gourmet

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

1 1/2 avocado
1/4 cup date syrup
1/2 cup cacao powder
1 tablespoon vanilla flavor by Frontier
1/4 cup carob powder

Directions:

In food processor or blender, combine all ingredients and blend or process until smooth. Serve chilled.

1/2 tasse de raisins de Corinthe
3 c. à table de jus de citron
3 c. à table d'huile d'olive
1 c. à thé de sel de mer
1/4 c. à thé d'ail en purée
3 c. à table de cumin
1/4 c. à thé de poivre noir en poudre

Préparation:

Mélangez tous les ingrédients dans un saladier à la main et c'est prêt!
